Dapper upgrade fails

Hmmm, I am trying to visualize how to apply this to my situation.
Given that it currently boots 2.6.12, but freezes when starting X/gdm,
I would need to:

1.) reinstall Breezy from scratch
2.) install the new kernel
3.) than run "update-manager -d"

This seems like rather a kludge. I am not only interested in
installing Dapper, I am interested in helping debug the install/update
program, and I can't see how following the instructions above will do
this. Update-manager screwed things up in the first place. Why should
I hope that it doesn't do so again just because a different kernel is
installed?
