Poor NFS performance in Ubuntu Breezy with fs mounted from aDebian 3.1 server

Performance was 10 MB/sec when mounted asynchronously. As far as I have
understood/realized mounting a NFS exported fs synchronously will cause
very poor performance no matter what.

I also realized that I really do not want to mount the fs synchronously.
What I want is to use is hard and intr which the NFS-howto recommends
and which causes the behaviour I confused with the sync option.
