Dapper + LTSP: Boot into console login (tty1) instead of gui

Hello,

I have a small lab setup with 1 server and 2 Compaq Deskpro
(pII350/128MB) pc's that I experiment with LTSP on. 
Currently I have a setup with Dapper on the server. It works pretty well
but I have one annoying problem:

The thin clients boot fine, but instead of presenting the nice ldm(?)
login window, the user ends in tty1 with a regular console login prompt.
It is possible to get the gui login prompt with ALT+F7. How can
I force it to always show the gui login prompt?
