  After trying this one and various otherf combinations Peter Garrets suggestion of
a simple " sudo mc " with the default terminal changed from gnome-terminal, 
which doesn't handle mc properly on my machine, to rxvt-unicode which does, 
it works. The root mc comes up in a small terminal window but I can handle that.
