UK pound symbol not available on Dapper 6.06

I've just noticed that my laptop's
installation of Dapper doesn't give me a
pound sign from the keyboard.

Shift 3 should give the UK pound symbol, but
it just gives a three as though it
is unshifted. *All* other keys are correct both
shifted and unshifted, so I do
appear to have a UK keyboard layout installed
and active. (By this I mean that
1! 2" 4$ 5% 6^ 7& 8* 9( 0) \| '@ #~ /? .> ,<
all associate correctly with
shifted and unshifted versions of the keys.)

I have rerun dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg,
but there is no change to the symptoms.

The keyboard preferences show UK as the set default.

I can't find any references to others having
this problem with Dapper. Any
suggestions?

Neil

PS The only other problem appears to be that the
Dell keyboard marking for
euro symbol (right alt and top row 4) doesn't work.
  I can't find the euro
elsewhere either, but haven't bothered to turn
 it on in the keyboard
preferences. I will sort that later.

PPS My workaround is to use the character
pallette applet to insert £ and €
but I should be able to get them from the keyboard.
