FWIW, I had this same problem printing from Dapper to a SUSE 10 CUPS
printer. The printer in my case is an Epson Stylus R200 connected
directly to the SUSE box.

SUSE installs the Foomatic printer driver by default, and uses an
earlier version of CUPS as compared to Dapper.

Here's the fix that worked for me:

On the SUSE box (which by the way was already quite usable by every
other Linux and Windows box in the office, and also accessible across
several subnets over a number of VPNs) I created a second queue for the
problematic printer using instead the CUPS-Gimp-Print drivers for this
new queue.

On the Dapper box, I deleted the original R200 printer, and created a
new IPP printer that referenced the new queue created using the
CUPS-Gimp-print drivers (eg.
http://mysuseboxIP:631/printers/newqueuename).

Bingo, I can now print from Dapper to this printer just fine.

HTH, YMMV.

All the best,
Mark
