Are you using the standard ubuntu kernel (2.6)?

AFAIK, openmosix does not run on 2.6 kernels yet, from the openmosix
faq: http://howto.x-tend.be/openMosixWiki/index.php/FAQ

"Note that openMosix is currently only available for 2.4 series
kernels: a 2.6 series openMosix kernel is currently in development but
is not ready for production use."

and on their frontpage: http://openmosix.sourceforge.net/
"2006-05-21 - Alpha openMosix 2.6 Tools will remain for Developers
only until released as Beta."

You probably have to use the kernel-source-2.4.27 package.
