I do not have a Palm TX, but I have a Palm Tungsten T.

I never needed to mount usbfs manually, Ubuntu does that automatically
on system startup.

I have always needed to press the Hotsync button on the cradle and then
wait about 5 seconds until the two device nodes appeared on my system
(/dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1). Then hotsync works just fine. If you
add the Pilot applet to the panel, then it automatically detects your
Palm and starts hotsyncing. Personally I use pilot-xfer from the
command line manually.

Also note that different Palm models (m500, Tungsten T, Tungsten T3)
use different devices for syncing (/dev/ttyUSB1, /dev/ttyUSB0,
/dev/ttyUSB1). Try both and see which one works.

larger or much smaller, depending upon whether you are talking about
functionality, or lines of code. ;-)
