(partly) replying to my own questions...

I underestimated the power/usefulness of Google... simply typing "ICH5 motherboard" returned a few results that suggest that:

1) the ICH5 circuit wasn't available as a standalone chip, but was rather integrated in M/B chipsets
2) It was only integrated in Intel chipsets
3) ICH5 was implemented in at least these two chipsets: Intel 875P, and 865G
5) These chipsets were available on non-Intel motherboard, like Asus, Asrock, MSI and Gigabyte.

Well, I am less in the dark now ! Just need to determine what was the first (read: oldest/cheapest today) chipset, so I can go and hunt for a dirty cheap second hand motherboard on Ebay....
