The LTSP package (part of edubuntu) uses PXE to boot up thin clients.
One possibility is to install that package (you can in ubuntu), see
how it does it, and then modify the boot image to look like normal
Ubuntu, instead of the educational version. I've gotten this to work,
but it was a long time ago, in Breezy, I think.

Install ltsp-server-standalone or ltsp-server (I think you use this
one if you already have a DHCP/TFTP server).
