Try commenting out the auto line for the ethernet port in 
/etc/network/interfaces so that it doesn't think your wired connection 
is on, its probably defaulting to it.

Network Manager is supposed to detect when you plug into a line to 
gracefully switch between wired/wireless but I still have to tell it to 
connect when I boot.

Which version of windows are you connecting to, I've found different 
behavior between 2000 and XP, 2000 always asks for a password.
