Visiting gmail via https: forces ssl encryption. Normally, when you
go to the gmail page in a non-encrypted session, gmail briefly
switches to ssl to transmit your credentials, then switches back to
non ssl once you've logged in. However, forcing ssl from the
beginning by using the https: URI, gmail will stay encrypted
throughout your entire session.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Https for more information.

If you reply to a message I posted to a mailing list,
and you want me to see your reply, be sure to put my
address in the 'To:', or I might not see the message.
