Mldonkey too old? LowID?

I looked at the HighID web page, and it did go over my head a bit.
What I think I've gained from it is that:
    1. My router has the appropriate ports (6346 TCP & UDP, 4662 TCP,
and 4672 UDP) mapped to 192.168.0.2.
    2. My router usually assigns my computer the address 192.168.0.2,
but sometimes it assingns 192.168.0.3 or .4 instead.
    3. I need to somehow edit configurations on my computer to disable
DHCP so that my local IP address is static.

From the article, I got the impression that I needed to edit a file
called /etc/interfaces. I tried opening such a file with gedit, but it
was blank, or maybe it didn't even exist until I tried opening it.
I looked on Google for how to disable DCHP but didn't come up with
clear instructions. I am a newbie when it comes to Linux, so a lot of
information was a bit dense and hard to follow.

So, going one step at a time, I'd like to try disabling DHCP and
making my computer fixed at 192.168.0.2 and see if that helps.

    How do I do that?
