Installation problems

Wow! Quick responses! A very, very encouraging sign!
Ok... I'm no computer genius, or super-geek. But I'm very adept at resolving problems, usually through sheer, stubborn, relentless determination.
My system is an old patched together scrap heap. In other words, I built it from odds and ends. I have a Celeron 366 processor, and currently use 416? megs of RAM, I have 3 strips of RAM, a 256, a 128, and I think a 64, I'd have to double check. I'm trying to load the OS on to my E:\ drive, which is 20 gig drive. I have it set as the "Master" at IDE 0. I'm booting the CD RW, and have my current "Pile-O-Shot" WindowsXP OS running on the C:\ drive. When I remove the CD from the drive, my system's secondary boot is "IDE 1". Which is the C:\ drive. This way I can boot to my semi-functioning system, until I get the Linux distrobution up and running. Of course, for safety reasons against viruses, I have Norton Internet Security running there as well. Personally, I think I would rather deal with the viruses and format my disk every 6 months than deal with Norton. And I also fully believe Norton is an "Anti-Virus" Virus! It infects every part of my system, won't allow me to as I wish, uses
up all of my bandwidth AND memory AND Cpu capacity! Does anyone have an anti-virus removal tool for Norton? Lol! Can you feel my pain?
Anyway, I've ranted long enough. Eventually, when everything is functioning, I plan on installing the Linux to my other computer, whish is a SCSI II, using 5 separate drives, 4 of which are removable. It's an old Dell server, and inheritance from the County. Of course, it will NOT boot from CD, it absolutely hates XP, it keeps losing the boot records. So, for now, it's a very impressive looking paperweight, or building weight, it weighs about 65 lbs.
So, I'm using the Verizon wireless broadband for my internet connection, and have a PCMCIA slot installed in my box. The Linux seems to recognize it right away, as I get a question regarding "enable PCMCIA support?". How do I get this thing to write the system file/partiton? Any clues? I already tried to install it on the same disc as my other system, not my 1st choice, but there's not enough room for both, only 6 gigs.
Any help is greatly appreciated, and I can offer a bounty of a WindowsXP or 200Server product key to the one who successfully resolves my problem! Yikes! That's like punishment for doing good! Sorry, bad idea!

  Regards,
