And you can also try Thunderbird 1.5. All you should have to do is 
unpack the tarball in, conventionally, /opt, secure it properly and link 
the executables from /usr/bin. If you need to recover your emails (from 
Ubuntu's Thunderbird deb package) you also have to remane the 
Thunderbird directory from ~/.mozilla-thunderbird to ~/.thunderbird.

There are instructions in 
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=116426. I haven't actually 
followed them, so I can't personally voucher for them, but they look OK.
