Dell Dimension E510 (aka Dimension 5150n), ATI Radeon X600, & Ubuntu

I just purchased a new Dell Dimension Desktop computer. I had intended
to purchase one of their "open-source" systems, but they cost more
without Windows than the exact same system with Windows. :( Ah, well, I
needed Windows dual-boot anyway for managing photos from my Nikon dSLR
camera.
Since this system is supposed to be compatible (when wearing the
n-series moniker) with Linux, at least with RedHat Linux, I expected a
smooth install. I have been running Debian at home for a looong time, so
I started with the Debian net boot, but it did not detect the integrated
Intel NIC. Having heard a lot of good things about Ubuntu, I decided to
try it out. Both Debian and Ubuntu required disabling frame buffering
(debian-installer/framebuffer=false). Ubuntu did detect and correctly
configure the NIC and network settings.
My current stumbling block is X. I can't get into X. I've tried
downloading the driver from the ATI website, converting the rpm to deb
with alien (no warnings, errors, etc), and installing, but still no luck.
I will note that Knoppix booted fine into X, detecting everything
correctly, but I'm not sure how to get the configuration from Knoppix
and apply it to Ubuntu.
System details below. Logs attached.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
Randy.
