First remove resp. purge your old AR installation. If the
installation from alien DEB then fails again tell us exactly what
you did.

BTW: Then the path to the executable is:
/usr/local/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/bin/acroread

Create a link in your path or place a starter in your panel.
