I'll give Dapper a try tonight. I get the same results whether using the 
OS drivers or the ATI proprietary drivers--X tries to start, giving just 
a black screen, then it dumps me back at command line.

Actually, I googled on this ATI card (and 'puter) before I purchased it. 
The only things I found seemed to indicate that I only needed to 
download the ATI driver, run it through Alien, and install it. I think 
that was specific to Debian though; would Ubuntu be different in some 
respect?
