Ubuntu disables the root account by default. You can still run commands 
as root, but it requires doing the following:

from the command line type:

sudo command_to_run_here

then enter the password you supplied during install

 From Gnome/KDE, etc. you can make a LAUNCHER (Shortcut) to the command 
you want, for example Nautilus. Just right click the desktop, then left 
click "Create Launcher" then under command type:

gksudo nautilus
