apt-cache & SOLVED: Re: setting up very limited email server with pop3 access

thanks clive, that was a big help.  Ended up justi nstalling dovecot
-- a breeze to get started -- and am using getmail to metch & process
on theo ther computers.  so far it seems ok.  I may try various
refinements down the road -- thanks for your help!

ps -- this is an afterthought -- onereaosn I was having so much
trouble was that apt-cache seems broken on the server (running ubuntu
breezy).  So e.g. "apt-cache search pop" gives no results.  
apt-get install dovecot-pop3d 
works fine though.    Is there something I can do to regenerate the
cache?
