My attempts to get irda working were quite funny, I never got the gist of
"official" guidelines, always problems with things that should have worked.
However, now I can at least transfer files between my Siemens CFX65 phone
and my Dell laptop. So you see, no real pointers of helping with ThinkPad,
but I noticed that you didn't see irda0 named device in /dev. Well, I don't
have it either, instead there are loads of ircomm* named devices.

Dmesg on my laptop also gives:

jaska at jjod600n:~$ dmesg | grep irda
[4294700.477000] irda_init()
[4294735.461000] irtty_open - ttyS3: irda line discipline opened

So I'm quite confused which device file this thingie really is using.

No real help, I'm afraid, just letting you know how my config works.

I also tried to install smsc-ircc2 module, unsuccesfully, even with smcinit
helping:

jaska at jjod600n:~$ sudo insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.12-10-686/kernel/drivers/net/irda/smsc-ircc2.ko
Password:
insmod: error inserting
'/lib/modules/2.6.12-10-686/kernel/drivers/net/irda/smsc-ircc2.ko': -1 No
such device

IrDA seems to be difficult, hope you manage to get it working.
