Hmm, that rings a bell !! ;-)
I have the same video chip (built-in the nForce chipset of my
motherboard), and had the same problems as you, in worse !
Not only owuld I get screen corruption when logging-out, but when
logging back-in, it would hard-lock the machine after only a few
seconds. When logged the first time, no hard locks, but endless
segfaults ! That was true on Warty, Hoary, and now Breezy. I don't know
about Dapper, because I was so sick of these problems that I replaced
the Nvidia driver (seeing as it's closed source hence impossible to
fix), with the open source 'nv' driver, which is stable. But that driver
doesn't do 3D. So seeing as I was stuck with 2D, I disabled the on-board
Nvdia chip altogether, and dug out my old Matrox Millenium II video
card, as it gives a better/sharper/cleaner picture than the GeForce.
I have decided not to waste a penny in ATI or Nvidia card anymore, as
it's russian roulette, and am impatiently looking forward to the
"opengraphics" project, to release their open-source graphics card (all
being well, cross fingers ! ;-). This way at least, we should have good
drivers, and if there is a bug, it can be fixed in the best possible
time frame, and properly.
Obviously if you have to have accelerated 3D, I guess all you can do is
buy some other model of Nvidia or ATI card, and cross fingers that it
happens to work properly on your particular machine :-/
