powerpc ibook modem/sound

I have just finished my first mac installation of Ubuntu:
 
 Everything seems to work except for the modem and sound:
 
 wvdial Finds the modem but says it can't set it. if you try and run wvdial again before shutting the computer down it can't find it.
 
 setserial shows undefined uart no port address and 230400 baud IRQ 22
 
 
 I'm lost as where to go from here!
 
 I think this machine is laughing at me....
 
 Sound is not enabled, as it is built into these ibooks (two speakers) I don't have much info to go on there either.
 A search on apple for data on the modem or sound  information/specifications was about as useful as substituting my toaster oven manual :-)  Same amount of useful information :-(
 
 
 Any help would be greatly appreciated!
