This discussion, "Convert WMA to MP3"
<http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=273400>, has
some scripts which can be used for this purpose, using mplayer as
intermediary.

I have also used such a script to convert MP3 rips of mono recordings
(pre 1958 stuff) from high bit-rate joint stereo to medium bit-rate
single channel, thereby saving many MBs of diskspace.

I won't argue with this, except to say that some formats, like WMA and
APE, are a PITA and worth the sacrifice.
