sound card problems

uname -a                   Linux ubuntu 2.6.12-10-386

(ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Cont roller (rev 03)

physical layout of jacks:

FRONT: one OUT and one MIC
BACK: 5 mini jacks. out, mic, surround, center etc.

problem description:

- only ONE jack will output sound. That jack is the OUT jack on the
back of the PC. the other OUT jack in front of PC wont work, like the
others wont either.

- only XMMS and VLC are able to produce sounds, amarok and totem are
not. there is NO sound card in system> pref>sound

NOTE> system sounds work

NOTE: I wasnt able to do the following bit: "Run alsamixer and turn
off IEC related options". I couldnt see IEC anywhere.. can someone
tell me how to turn that off? its helped quite a few I noticed.

I have ammended accordingly to the GENERAL FIX, the first paragraph. no joy.

one last thing: the sound controller on top right corner which can be
pulled up and down doesnt yield any results> taking it up or down
doesnt change anything.
