I do not believe this is true.  Depending on exactly which card you 
have, the mesa drivers very well may provide accelerated 3D support. 
I'm using a Radeon 9800 Pro and the open source mesa drivers now provide 
impressive accelerated results with glxgears, though sometimes it locks 
up, so YMMV.
