In many ways imageMagick is a little bit more extensive than GD; but
as it would turn out, I can't find a php5 module (in ubuntu) to add
support for imageMagick (there is a php4 one though...)

You _could_ get the imagick module from
http://pecl.php.net/package/imagick and roll your own, if you were
ambitious.

Personally, I'd just stick with php5-gd for simplicity.  I've used GD
lots and never really said "oh damn, i wish I used imagemagick." ;)
