This isn't a fix as such, more like a suggestion. ;-)

First, if it's a two button mouse, using the middle button features of
Linux will be a pain (you have to click both the buttons simultaneously).

So... I would suggest you pick up a USB mouse with a scroll button (which
will also act as a clickable middle button) . Plugging a USB mouse in
should Just Work (tm) I use one on my laptop (iBook G4, Breezy 5.10) and it
springs to life immediately.

Another idea might be to install "mdetect" :

Description: mouse device autodetection tool
 mdetect is a tool for autoconfiguring mice; it is typically used as the
 backend to some user-friendly frontend code.

It's in the main repository, so you should find it in the Synaptic package
manager.
