Odd, I thought postfix was the default MTA on Ubuntu. I use debian with
exim4 mostly. I tried to uninstall postfix on my Ubuntu install and
it threatened to remove the desktop and various other things. I guess
it must be for the desktop configuration.
I gather your problem is sorted anyway :)
