How to get Network Manager working?

Hello,

I have NetworkManager installed.  nm-applet runs, but when I look at
the list of access points, each one has a big red stop sign (red
circle with a white bar) indicating that the access point cannot be
used.  I have attempted to configure a connection repeatedly, with no
success.
I have a ipw2200.  FWIW, I can connect to an open or WEP-encrypted
connection using gtk-wifi, but gtk-wifi cannot handle WPA.
