launcher icons

 Whenever I create a new launcher, if the icons presented are not suitable I click on the browse icon, but every icon in other directories is greyed out no matter whether it's a xpm or png. How do you pick an icon from another directory? They are also presented in list form rather than the thumbnails that show in the original directory.
Bug? Feature?
