Unless you're an expert, its easiest to just type sudo apt-get install
[k/x]ubuntu-desktop. Place a k in front for kde, an x in front for xfce,
or just plain ubuntu-desktop if you want gnome. You really will just
have problems if you try anything else, but that way, everything gets
just installed for you. Basically if you are looking for more of a
challenge, try Debian or Gentoo, both of those are designed with what
you described in mind. I've found that Ubuntu is much easier to set up,
but is also a little bit harder to custom configure then fc3 for example
(having used both). Personally I prefer Ubuntu, if it just works, then
why tamper with it?
