Sometime I had a similar behaviour.
What do you get with:
$ ls -la ~/.ICEauthority
?
It should be s.th. like this:
$ ls -la .ICEauthority
- -rw------- 1 USER USER 32951 19.02.06 15:47 .ICEauthority
^^ ^^ If this is root, you?ll have the problems described.
