I have the same camera and I download the pictures in PTP mode using
gThumb (in Applications->Graphics->gThumb). I can run slide shows quite
nicely, no problem.
Are you taking pictures in RAW mode rather than JPEG? I use JPEG at the
highest quality. Decoding RAW on Linux seems to be a problem.
