Try getting hold of "xv" from PLF or somewhere. If you run it from a shell 
script, you can use it as a slideshow program. I type the following:

 xv -maxpect -wait 5 *.jpg

This expands all the files with the suffix "jpg" in the current directory to 
fit the screen while retaining the correct aspect ratio and displays them one 
after another at 5 second intervals.
