I'd hold off on Konqueror just yet AND from installing individual *.deb
files. You MIGHT want to install Kubuntu desktop instead.

First you should update your machine and use Synaptic , Update Manager
and"Add Programs" from your default install menus. The default install
should have put docs in "help: (lifepreserver). To get software to
download you'll need internet access WITH the ubuntu computer.

As your modem doesn't work I would think the best thing to do FIRST
would be to install internet connection sharing in your windows
computer, add network cards if needed, buy a crossover cable or a
switch/hub.
Set up your win computer as a gateway to use Ubuntu with accesss to the
net.

In networking on the ubuntu you would then list the windows ip address
as the gateway, and access the internet through that computer WITH the
ubuntu computer. This will let you use the "normal" means of updating
the computer. To share files you will need SAMBA, but the computer
should serve as a gateway fine without it.
If you use fixed IP address you'lll need a few things added. If Possible
have the win computer work as a DNS server with it's address fixed,
depending on your windows version I believe it picks either 192.168.0.1
or 192.168.0.10 as a (gateway) address with internet connections
sharing..(.it's been a long time since I used windows). .
If no DNS
give both computers an ip address in the private range like: 192.169.0.1
and 192.168.0.2

then add both computers to each others' hosts file.

Put the two dns servers the win computer gets from the ISP in the
networking gui on UBUNTU

This allsounds harder than it is. If you have network cards in both
computers it won't be expensive. Depending on what firewall is in the
windows computer tweaking/replacing that may be the most difficult part.
Some windows firewalls don't support internet connection sharing.

hope this helps out. I'm SURE I've left at least one thing out ;-)

A goodly portion of the people here have done these things so remember
the only dumb question is the one not asked!

Have fun.
