gjiten works for me - and is a pretty good dictionary. For some reason,
though, the version in the repositories does have that bug you describe
above. I got around it by using the configuration editor and adding it
from there:

Start the configuration editor from menu->system tools->configuration
editor

In there, go to apps->gjiten->general

There should be a key dictionary_list - double-click to edit it (if
there isn't one, create it). It should be a list, of type string.

There add the full path to the dictionary (in my case I have three
entries: "/usr/share/gjiten/dics/edict",
"/usr/share/gjiten/dics/compdic" and "/usr/share/gjiten/dics/enamdic" -
without the quotes).

When you start gjiten, you should have your dictionaries - but with no
names. So go to edit->preferences, select the dictionary, choose
properties, and enter the name.

Done!

I think this bug slipped through the cracks since, if you used an
earlier version, the dictionary settings were already done.
