But it is the 'standard' way X works? So it's actually repairing your 
installation unless you run xfree86 instead of xorg as x-server. 
/usr/bin/X is a link to /usr/bin/Xorg on my machine.

sudo ln -sf /usr/bin/Xorg /etc/X11/X turned my setup back to normal 
after trying Xgl which failed terribly...
