That's strange. I'm using Ubuntu here with WEP and MAC filtering, no
problems (except that network-admin is junk).
I have this (among other stuff) in /etc/network/interfaces:
iface eth1 inet dhcp
wireless-essid My-SSID
wireless-key s:my-key-as-ascii
The important bit is that "s:" - that lets you give the WEP key as 13
ASCII characters. If you don't have something very like this in your
interfaces file, then it won't work...
Can your laptops associate with the AP/router OK without WEP?
By the way, if you are MAC filtering, don't forget to add your new
laptops' MAC addresses to the allow list!
