I've been spending a lot of time there recently - good to be getting
familiar with it I guess.

It isn't showing either of them, just the two HDD's, it reads something
like this:
Primary IDE Master: WDC WD1200JB-00FUA (my ATA 120GB disk)
Primary IDE Slave: not installed
Secondary IDE Master: not installed
Secondary IDE Slave: not installed
Third IDE Master: Maxtor 6V300F0 (my SATA 300GB disk)
Third IDE Slave: not installed
Fourth IDE Master: not installed
Fourth IDE Slave: not installed
As I understand it my CD/R and DVD players should be in this list,
right?

I've tried that and tried setting them both to cable select. makes no difference.

thanks, I read a fair bit of that, it's a bit old and he repeats himself a lot.

Yeah, I thought it used to be. Currently I can only see the list of IDE devices if I go into BIOS (that could be a 'feature').
Thanks for trying to help again ed,
