Desktop recorders?

I've been trying to find things that are apparently called "Desktop
Recorders."  One such is xvidrec, but it's not packaged in Ubuntu and I
can't make it build on my AMD64.  Trying to find other things to
straight video my desktop to MPEG or such but no such luck.

Any ideas?
