suspend2 weirdness

So a while ago, I had gotten suspend2 working well on my laptop.
Then, a few days ago, without anything major (that I'm aware of)
changing, when I resume, certain things stop working. For example,
if I run ifconfig in an xterm, nothing happens, and I can't even C-c
to break the command.
Even more annoying, it hangs on a restart/shutdown at the step of
stopping Firestarter.
Furthermore, while this is probably more of an issue with the kernel
that I had to recompile, I also can't get NetworkManager to work.
Essentially, what is happening is that at boot, the ipw2200 driver
does not load for some reason, and I have to manually modprobe the
ieee80211 and ipw2200 drivers. As soon as the ipw2200 driver is
loaded, the nm-applet icon disappears from the panel.
Any ideas on either of these problems?
Thanks,
Mike
