Digramming tool (but not Dia)?

Hi,
I'm taking a computer architecture class, and our assignments involve
a lot of logical circuit diagrams. I'm looking for a good diagramming
tool. It needs to be able to connect lines to objects as well as to
arbitrary points on other lines. I also need to be able to move
objects around and have the lines adjust and follow, preferably
keeping at right angles.
I've tried Dia, but it's extremely limited, and doesn't even allow
rotation of objects. It also doesn't allow me to connect an endpoint
of a line to an arbitrary point on another line.
I've also tried XFig (talk about old school!). It isn't much better.
I couldn't seem to be able to connect lines to objects at all.
I've thought about Qcad, but I'm not sure if a CAD program is
appropriate for this type of task, and I don't believe it will let me
move the objects around arbitrarily and with the lines adjusting to
follow.
Are there any other suggestions? Java apps are okay. Also this need
not be a packaged (deb) application, though that certainly would be
preferred.
Thanks!
