Post-install packages

Let's face it: due to various restrictions (amount of space on the CD, a
desire to avoid redundancy in the default install, and a few legal
issues, particularly in the United States), we all have apt-get a lot of
packages after installing a fresh system.

What I'm interested in doing is creating a post-install script that
handles the most commonly requested applications. Unlike Automatrix, it
won't add a bunch of strange lines to your sources.list file, and in
contrast to EasyUbuntu, it will add the Universe, Multiverse, and
Backports repositories to the same--things not in those repositories
will be downloaded via wget.

Please note that this script won't even be around until after Dapper, so
I'll be targeting that version, so please don't include things like
Firefox 1.5, which is already there.

Thus far, I've got the following items out of the repos:
1. Totem-Xine (and the Xine dependency)
2. GTKpod (with AAC support--wget from Marillat)
3. MPlayer/Mozilla plugin
4. the Flash plugin
5. A Java Runtime Environment (probably Blackdown's, out of Multiverse)
and Mozilla plugin
6. Mozilla Thunderbird
7. GNOME Office (and the Abiword plugins)
8. XMMS (with support for all codecs)
9. D4X
10. gFTP
11. EasyTag
12. The Gstreamer plugins (both universe and multiverse--except AAC, due
to a conflict with GTKpod-AAC)
13. w32codecs (for non-US users only)
14. libdvdcss (again, non-US only, unless the law isn't as tough on that
as I suspect it is)
15. Lynx
16. Opera (wget from upstream)
17. gdebi

If you have a suggestion, I'd like to hear it. Of course, I'm not going
to be adding other desktops or window managers to this script, as that
goes a bit beyond what I have in mind, which is to set up a
newbie-friendly system with a single script. Just so you know, I'm also
considering things like a CD burner (possibly K3B, but perhaps one of
the GTK2 options) and a blogging client (I like LogJam, but if you've
got a better idea, I'd like to hear it).

Thanks,
