Do you mean that you copied a file that was on an NTFS disk somewhere 
and it's now sitting in /home where Windows can't use it?

As others already replied, you can't write to NTFS. Well, you can do 
some forms of writing but the Linux kernel will not let you create 
new files.

You have to copy the file to a filesystem that XP can use and that 
Linux can write to. Then boot Windows to read the file. Try these:

- a FAT USB stick
- a vfat partition (you might have to make and format it first)
- burn it to cd
