Alternatives to ubuntu?

That might be a valid point if the guy was running on an old PII or
something, but...

In general, I find Ubuntu to be a bit sluggish compared to most other
distros. Part of that is that I use a laptop with a slow drive and IDE
bus. But that's only part. Ubuntu just seems less snappy than other
distros, even using GNOME on them. 

One example. After a while not using the top panel, I click the
Applications menu, and it takes 2-3 seconds for the menu to pop up.
After that, it's fine, and so are the other menus on the top panel. It
appears that it may swap out the menu, and swap back in when accessed,
which is fine, but it's awfully annoying for that few seconds. 

Also, this has gotten better in the recent past, since before, the menus
would jump around as they loaded the little icons, now that doesn't
happen, and the little icons load much faster, so progress is definately
being made.
