*looks over shoulder...*
So I can disable the eth0 interface and spoof the mac address in a
script after the computer has booted. Thats how i found out that
/etc/init.d/networking seems to make things go awry.
Though on my unspoofed computer, the same still applies at boot time.

If it works for me, then I usually use it ;-)
How can I deactivate/deconfigure and reactivate/reconfigure in a
script without using /etc/init.d/networking?

By "networking" do you mean my overzealous use of /etc/init.d/networking?
My interface goes away whenever I unplug the cable, it clutters up the
place to leave it in :-)
I have found this method works (spoofed and non-spoofed alike)...
1) Completely deconfigure and deactivate eth0 from the gui, network-admin
2) Plug in ethernet cable and reconfigure and reactivate eth0 from gui
At this point I appear to have the right IP address according to ifconfig.
