Wrt Xresources,

xrdb -query

will tell you if Xft.dpi is set.

To refresh without restarting X, you can change the dpi in
System-Preferences-Font-Details.

However, odd things happen, and there is a bug lurking here. If I just
open and close the font manager, it sets Xft.dpi to 96.00000. If I to
into the details and close, it sets to 75 from my .Xresources file.

When I do restart X, I wonder what will happen...

Emacs is still a little slow to startup, but doesn't give me messages
like:

> Unable to load font
> -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--11-81-100-100-c-0-iso8859-1

> Unable to load font
> -misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--13-98-100-100-c-0-iso8859-1 [5 times]
