Wrong, if you can't find a driver for the i915 chipset, then definitely 
don't just use any random driver.

no

it shoudl work better in 2.6, not worse, provided you ahve the right 
drivers installed.

There aren't any. Use 2.6.11 if you want kernel headers. Alternatively 
compile the latest kernel headers and kernel from the vanilla linux 
kernel without alterations.

Something to talk to the devs about, or maybe you're doing something wrong.

Why are you using the nvidia-glx package with your intel graphics 
device? Obviously it wouldn't work. Either deactivate the intel device 
and use the nvidia one or pull out the nvidia one as superfluous. You 
should not use the nvidia drivers with a non-nvidia card.
