[dapper] monitor frequency during boot

Hi all

Had a 17 high res monitor on my dapper box which was running at 
1280x1024.... Then when working with freeNX from my laptop the high res 
was causing some issues in viewing, so set the screen res down to 
1024x768....

Then the monitor borks itself.....

park an old 15inch on the system, during the bootup the monitor goes out 
of range but I heaar drumroll..... log in blindly and when x starts, 
monitor goes back in range and runs fine.

What do I edit to change the res in initial bootup?
